Joe’s is a restaurant we’re proud to call our own and much as we’d like to think it’s our secret and exclusively ours, it’s much too good not to be discovered by the Duke City citizenry. In May, 2018 Yelp compiled its first ever Top 50 Places to Eat in Albuquerque. The highest ranked restaurant in this enumeration of exceptional eateries was Joe’s Pasta House.

The meatball parmigiana is much like those I’ve longed for–with one exception. Instead of baseball-sized meatballs that don’t fit between bread, Joe’s uses smaller (about ping pong ball sized) meatballs. There are enough meatballs that you can pluck some from the cozy confines of their bready home and enjoy them separately. A blanket of molten parmigiana and Joe’s wonderful red sauce cover those meatballs. Joe’s housemade sandwich bread (some of the best in the metro) is lightly toasted .

It must offer a combination of memorable food, a homey look and feel and mostly personable, attentive service. From Rhode Island to New Mexico, we’ve grown to love the community, culture and are honored to call it home. One night, we were craving Italian food from our favorite East Coast restaurants and were recommended Joe’s Pasta House. We fell in love with not just the food but also the warm, inviting atmosphere and service. Perusing the menu gave us the same euphoric sensation we always have at Joe’s, a realization that we’re about to enjoy another great meal.

Tony, one of our favorite servers, ferried over a plate of Joe’s sliced, warm bread with the restaurant’s incomparable bruscetta. A few years ago, I met Joe and Kassie at their restaurant at the wee hour of six A.M.. While there are myriad chemical processes that occur when bread is baking in an oven, those processes are the furthest thing from your mind when aromas envelop you. Joe’s bread is legendary…and that bruscetta is the very best in New Mexico. If the aromas of baking bread are its advertising, who needs a Madison Avenue marketing campaign. For my Kim, who has long had a crush on Joe and his “dreamy blue eyes,” stepping into Joe’s Pasta House for the first time since the change in ownership was traumatic.

Reviews for Joe's Pasta House

She’s used to getting a warm hug from Joe every time we visit. Fortunately, both Andrea and Chuck, fixtures at Joe’s Pasta House for years, assured us “nothing will change about the menu, the staff or the restaurant. It will still be Joe’s Pasta House.”  Our visit was also made a bit less painful because we were seated next to my friend and colleague Garth Colasurdo and his beautiful family. It was Garth’s first time at Joe’s Pasta House, but judging from the yummy noises emanating from their table, it won’t be the last. On April Fool’s Day in 1957, a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) broadcast purported to show a family in Switzerland harvesting spaghetti from the family spaghetti tree. Spaghetti was relatively unknown back then in the United Kingdom so the BBC was deluged by viewers asking for advice on growing their own spaghetti tree.

The meal was great and the restaurant was comfortable despite the freezing temperatures outside. What made our visit exceptional was the close attention that our server gave us. For once it was good not to hear "no rush" when it was time to settle the check and get on our way. As loyal customers, when we came across the opportunity and met with Joe, it was an easy decision, which we were honored to have. Over the last month we have become engrossed in learning the Joe’s Pasta House culture, and as a result we learned how this iconic restaurant has come to be. All orders must be paid in full at the time you are placing the order and prices do not included taxes and are subject to change.

Decades later, CNN named this broadcast “the biggest hoax any reputable news establishment ever pulled.”  For my Kim, spaghetti is no joking matter. Her favorite Italian dish is spaghetti with meat sauce, especially the way it’s prepared at Joe’s. She’s a sauce minimalist whereas her husband can bathe in the stuff. She reminds me that the only reason I don’t ever order it is that I lack the dexterity to wrap the pasta around my fork. Then in 1999, Joe and Kassie Guzzardi assumed ownership of the eponymous Joe’s Pasta House and began the process of winning over denizens of the City of Vision. For 23 years, the Guzzardis and Rio Rancho have shared a reciprocal love affair.

All subs are served with French fries though a small salad may be a better pairing. It’s become increasingly rare to find a “simple salad” at a restaurant. Instead, you’re likely to find composed salads, many ingredients arranged on a plate so that they look like a pretty picture.

At Joe’s you can still get a side salad and it’s comprised of lettuce (not spinach or “mixed greens”), cherry tomatoes and the salad dressing of your choice. My choice is always “as much blue cheese as you can carry” and Joe’s delivers with creamy, rich dressing punctuated generously with chunks of real blue cheese. You can also order a wedge salad, Greek salad, Caesar salad and a Spinach salad. They’re all good, but along with the bread they’ll fill you up and you certainly don’t visit Joe’s to fill up on bread and salad.

Among the 1,500 or so restaurants in the metropolitan area, none is as beloved by Yelpers as is Joe’s. With nearly 300 reviews (as of 26 May 2018), Joe’s has an average rating of 4.5 stars. Our menu consists of traditional red sauce dishes like our famous Parmigiana and even some of your favorite classics with a New Mexico flare. You’ll feel like you’re right in Nonna’s kitchen, right here in Rio Rancho.

Much as they might wish for it to happen, no restaurateur can make their restaurant THE hometown favorite. It happens organically and it happens only by the unanimous will and consent of the people. A restaurant has to prove itself every single time with every single guest.

Everyone thinks it must have been the sustainability factor, the sensationalism of hemp or even, our namesake- non-toxic, healthy homes. Since hempcrete appears lightweight, some people are concerned about its durability. Another famous illustration are the hemp panels of the British Science Museum that are used in an artifact storage unit because the material provides superior control of the environment.

This material does well in relative humidity above 90%, and it can hold the water vapor without degrading. The lime binder used in making hempcrete also has antimicrobial and antifungal properties that keep the coated surfaces of walls resistant to mold. The property is at 8,000 feet elevation surrounded by mountains on every side. The area is high plains desert so there are many piñon pines, rocky sandy ground and sage. The thermal performance coupled with the south facing windows and thermal mass will be extremely effective in the colder winter months.

The Science Behind Building With Hempcrete

Because this building sector is still in its nascent phase, no one actually knows what could happen if the demand for hemp houses would rise. But on Monday, the full Senate advanced the ban 27-9 without any debate. In what would be his opening and closing statements on the bill, he referenced the laws the legislature passed that created the consumable hemp industry in the state and updated requirements in recent years.

The insulating quality is r-2.5 per inch, and it has the unique ability to capture airborne pollutants over time -- it absorbs carbon when it is grown and in place. The material's high thermal mass helps keep a steady interior temperature as well. The interior walls are made from Purepanel, another unique product that is made from recycled paper. It consists of a rigid skin with a corrugated paper core, just like cardboard. The project also features 30 window frames that have been salvaged and fitted with high tech glass. They were placed to get the most daylighting without overheating the space.

The Controlled Substances Act of 1970 classified both hemp and marijuana as Schedule I substances, hindering their cultivation and its use. Recent years, though, have witnessed a resurgence of interest in hemp as a versatile and sustainable crop and legislative changes to distinguish it from marijuana. In the U.S., before being stigmatized and criminalized in the 20th century, cannabis had a long history of use for various purposes. In 1619, responding to England’s growing need for maritime ropes, Jamestown colonists cultivated hemp in the New World, as the Queen of England mandated. However, the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 marked the beginning of its prohibition, eventually leading to its classification as a Schedule I controlled substance in the 1970s. The subsequent decades saw a shift in public perception, with increasing acceptance of cannabis for both medicinal and recreational use, culminating in the legalization movement that swept across various states in the 21st century.

The inspiration for creating a hemp-based home came when the couple was still living in Los Angeles.

All three projects began, or were completed, in 2022 and the builders/subcontractors are already starting new projects. This is because it isn’t suitable for load-bearing walls, and the foundation structure has to be made out of timber and steel. A house made of hemp might sound like a hippie idea from the 70ies, but is actually a concept that can build our sustainable future.

Hemp Houses: A More Sustainable Way to Build and a Healthier Way to Live

This expense, multiplied across team members, adds up significantly for small businesses and entrepreneurs in the hemp industry. A Santa Barbara County official said a project has been submitted for planning approval but still needs to pass most stages of the permitting process. A house, outbuilding or any other structure would have to be deemed appropriate for the site, and any unconventional materials would have to be declared safe. In addition, hempcrete is a much better insulator than traditional concrete, though how much better depends on the moisture content and the density of the material.

We are doing the garage of a house we will build next year in La Veta, CO. We’re also building an office inside of Global Fiber Processing’s new facility and making blocks at our facility in Lafayette, CO. As for building projects, we have three in the books and several down the pipeline. Two in Wimberly and another in Pipe Creek is being zoned, mapped and prepped for rainwater harvesting, earthworks and permaculture while we are in the design phase. In that spirit, we’d like to introduce you to three new hempcrete builds in Texas, Colorado and Michigan.

It's already seen hundreds of inquiries, including some that want to create entire communities out of Travelers.

In addition, hempcrete is known to be resistant to pests, mold, and insects. One cubic meter of hempcrete wall can hold up to 30 kilograms of carbon. The House passed House Bill 952 by Rep. Dustin Miller, an Opelousas Democrat, that would keep consumable hemp products legal, but tighten regulations on them. "If anyone is exploring the idea of using an alternative building product they should definitely look into it [hemp]," she said. Ms Jankowski said the total cost of the build was about $300,000, which put it in the ballpark of conventional building products like double brick.

An open floor plan helps the light penetrate deep into the home as well. To maintain breathability, we use historic lime plasters on the exterior so moisture is always released keeping away mold and rot. In contrast, hemp houses are often described as breathable structures that provide natural sound and thermal insulation, humidity regulation, and effective protection from the elements.

This fully built cabin is sure to be the perfect space to feel good and get comfortable, whether as a Airbnb, a mother-in-law suite, or even temporary housing. This particular design, paired with small windows both helps the energy efficiency of the home and brings occupants out of the building so they spend more time connected with outdoor spaces. The hemp industry has emerged as a promising agricultural industry in recent years, offering economic opportunities and sustainable products. However, one significant hurdle faced by hemp producers is the requirement of fingerprinting and extensive background checks, which can be costly, time-consuming, and arguably unnecessary. Hempcrete blocks can maintain interior temperatures, among other uses, and are made of the plant's woody core, a limestone-based binder, and water.

They're also biodegradable, lightweight, and have no carbon footprint, according to Coexist. Hemp can also be used like stucco to protect the outside walls of new and existing homes from moisture. As a vapor-permeable material, it can absorb water when it’s raining and then expel it when the sun is shining.

To compare, concrete has an R- value of 0.1 to 0.2 per inch, making it an insufficient insulator. It would have cost even less if Velasco had been able to source the hemp hurd and lime locally, he said. Velasco trucked in American-grown hemp hurd from North Carolina and imported lime binder from Europe for the project. A movement to create low-cost mini-housing in the state of California may be the golden opportunity hemp building needs to enter the public consciousness, one builder and startup founder believes.

The required amount of building material itself isn’t as much as you would think. In fact, it’s been previously estimated that to build a 1250 square foot house, it would take 2.5 acres of hemp. However, the main obstacle is that it is approximately 20-30% pricier than concrete. The eco-friendliness of the process of making a home with your own two hands and the carbon negative footprint that can be left on the planet can make hemp houses an alternative that’s destined to provide future solutions.

The majority of the hemp house making labor is done by human hands and wooden tools that don’t use electricity. With the exception of the motor mixer needed to make hempcrete, the building process doesn’t require any energy-consuming methods. For a building constructed from natural materials, the hemp house is surprisingly minimalist and modern in design. This construction-grade hemp-crete block that will be used in place of drywall and insulation weighs, on average 7-9, pounds. A lighter building material means more can be done faster, and it saves money on transportation and labor.

Hempcrete will be certified in US building codes with an approval into the International Residential Code. As an illustration, one cubic meter of hempcrete wall can absorb up to 14 liters of water, which is then released to the ground. But, this quick explanation of the building process doesn’t begin to explain what a hemp home is. It is time to revisit and reform outdated regulations that impede the progress of a promising and sustainable industry. Rep. Laurie Schlegel, a Metairie Republican, made an amendment to have the bill ban the products altogether, like another proposal that moved through the Senate.

Located in Asheville, North Carolina, the 3,400 square foot Push House features a mainstream design with some very different systems behind its walls. The home’s use of hempcrete was only the start — for this application, hemp hurds are mixed with lime and water on-site and poured in-between the exterior supporting studs in lifts. It is the core to a breathable wall system — Hemcrete is actually less like concrete and more like infill straw bale, as it is non-structural.

Being successful in this field is going to require a lot of alterations. What we came in planning to do is not the same as what we now know we have to do to continue. It takes guts, sacrifice, passion, and a strategic mind in order to make it in this field. This year, after the first season of growing fiber strains of hemp domestically, we’re seeing processing plants sprouting up across the country. Essentially, walls made of hemp even out any temperature fluctuations and ensure that the inside is cooled during summer, and heated in the wintertime.

Velasco’s company, Dotek, LLC, believes the ADU movement in California is a revolution that can add extra housing on a statewide basis. There is a long dirt road and circle driveway surrounding the house for access. The expansion of the land is incredibly scenic and a perfect place for such an earthy building to be located. As our demand continues to grow we will continue to seek out and train craftsmen.

The farm also grows other products, including flax, and has already received research grants from the state's department of agriculture. It's also working with Thomas Jefferson University to create 3D printed hemp bioplastic home products to create a local "hemp farmer-to-end use" supply chain with carbon sequestering capabilities. The hemp blanket batt is made of 92% hemp fiber (the remaining 8% is a binder) and is "superior to all insulations on the market because of its high density and thermal mass properties," according to its maker. "Hemp is very energy efficient material," said Corey Hughes, the CEO of the company Construction Grade HEMP. "It would usually bring the energy bill down 15% in the home. So you could turn on your heat on Monday and you won't need to turn it on until Thursday. Turn on your AC on Monday and not again until Tuesday night." Whole wall R-values depend on the framing material, the presence of thermal bridges, the kind of insulation, and the quality of its installation.

Margaret River builder Brendan Kelly put down the slab and erected the timber frame, the hemp walls and the roof. Most of the couple's hemp came from leftovers at the Denmark DecoVillage community housing project. The Western Australian couple hand built the three-bedroom home on a five-acre bush block in Kronkup, 30 kilometres west of Albany. We typically spend 3-5 days on-site, and oversee the installation of hempcrete and provide on-the-job training to your construction crew. Designed for professional builders, this course provides an opportunity to explore new ways to use hempcrete and advance your professional understanding of this biocomposite. Available only to Professional Hempcrete Builders, our Master Classes are perfect for those who long to advance their skills and explore new ways to build with hemp and lime.

As Connecticut reevaluates its hemp production and regulation policies, there is an opportunity for broader reform at the national level. The hemp industry is poised for exponential growth, particularly with expanding applications in textiles, construction materials, and health products. Removing barriers to entry, such as fingerprinting and extensive background checks, will foster innovation, entrepreneurship, and job creation within this burgeoning sector. The principal material for the project is Hempcrete, made of the woody internal stem of the Cannabis sativa plant, which is processed into chips and mixed with a lime-based binder. That concoction is then sprayed on, poured into slabs or formed into blocks like concrete to create the shell of a building.

Flat Iron Steak Was Invented Way More Recently Than You Think

cattlemen's steak house

Today, we carry on this legacy by offering the finest quality steaks cooked to perfection, providing a dining experience that celebrates the time-honored traditions of the steakhouse. The origins of the first steak houses can be attributed to the rise of the cattle industry in the United States. As pioneers and settlers moved westward, cattle ranching became a significant part of the American economy. The first steak houses emerged in the late 1800s, primarily in the Midwest and on the East Coast. These establishments catered to ranchers, cowboys, and travelers, serving them generous portions of tender, juicy steaks cooked over open flames. Our steakhouse in OKC pays homage to these early establishments by offering a diverse selection of cuts and preparing them with the same dedication and skill that characterized the original steak houses.

Cattlemens Old Fashioned

At Cattlemen’s Steakhouse in OKC, we take pride in the rich history of the steakhouse tradition. Initially, steak houses were seen as places where men gathered to enjoy hearty meals and indulge in quality cuts of beef. Over the years, these establishments evolved into iconic dining destinations, known for their warm ambiance and mouthwatering steaks.

And, by golly, if a few greenhorns manage to wrangle their way into the boot shop, that's okay, too. They won't find any "My parents went to Stockyard City and all I got was this lousy T-shirt" shirts or Elvis salt and pepper shakers. But they may leave knowing what a real steak tastes like, and that real boots don't come from Bloomingdale's. With several locations in the surrounding areas, we take pride in sourcing locally and supporting our community's suppliers. Our commitment is to deliver the finest cuts of premium beef, aged to perfection, and cooked to your preferred doneness, all while maintaining our local roots and values. It may seem odd that "meat scientist" is an actual career, but it's true — at least for Chris Calkins of the University of Nebraska and Dwain Johnson of the University of Florida.

Dinner Menu

But what Calkins and Johnson discovered in 2001 involved a particular part of the chuck called the top blade that had largely been overlooked for its high degree of connective tissue. When butchered properly, the top blade could actually be trimmed in a specific way to get rid of the sinew, resulting in an extremely flavorful and surprisingly affordable steak unlike anything on the market at the time. It required a significant amount of skill from butchers, but the end result was more than worth it. Cattlemen's Steakhouse is located smack in the middle of Stockyard City, a "must see" when visiting Oklahoma City.

Our steakhouse in OKC has become a favorite among locals and visitors alike, offering a warm and inviting atmosphere coupled with mouthwatering steaks that keep guests coming back for more. Whether you're a resident or just passing through, a visit to our steakhouse promises a truly memorable and satisfying dining experience. There's one steak cut, though, that's more recent — way more recent — to the point where it's barely older than the iPod. This is the flat iron steak, which isn't just one of the best cuts of steak for a dinner party, but also a triumph of meat science. It all started in 1998, when the National Cattleman's Beef Association tossed substantial grant money to a couple of scientists in the hopes of finding a new type of steak that had somehow been previously overlooked.

Since 1947, Cattlemen's Internationally Famous Steak House has been in the business of serving quality cuts of meat and other fine menu items for lunch and dinner, all with a friendly smile, in an authentic western environment. Savor the signature Heart o' Texas rib-eye, a nicely marbled slab, as you watch the cook sear it over an open fire—the dining room's focal point. Before these experiments, the chuck (aka the shoulder area of the cow) was considered good only for things like ground beef for hamburgers.

Dubbing the result the flat iron steak for its resemblance to an old fashioned flat iron (broader at one end and tapered at the other), the NCBA went on a press blitz to popularize the new creation. The results were almost immediate, with flat iron rapidly becoming one of the top ten steak cuts in America both by volume and total sales over the next two decades. While their biggest hit, flat iron steak wasn't Calkins and Johnson's only success — if you've ever wondered what a Denver steak is or how you should cook it, that was another discovery of theirs.

The Classic Steaks

In the late '90s, they put that title to good use when the NCBA gave them a $1.5 million grant to find an entirely new cut of steak. The pair tested 5,600 muscles to try to find something to fit the bill, and while they ultimately narrowed it down to 39 possibilities, there was one that stood head and shoulders above the rest. As the well-connected pastor of the Glide Memorial Church in the blighted Tenderloin district, he preached a “radically inclusive” gospel in serving people in need.

If you’re looking for the best steakhouse experience in the Sonoma and Napa area, stop by the Rohnert Park Cattlemens to enjoy hand-cut steaks, sizzling prime rib, Seafood, pasta, and chicken entrees. Just a few miles from Sonoma State University, Cattlemens is the perfect place to relax and have a great meal. In addition to being a delicious cut known for both flavor and affordability, it's also very versatile, as one of the best cuts of beef to use in place of flank steak (despite coming from a completely different part of the cow). It does very well with marinades and makes a great cut for tacos, whether you treat it as a slow-cooked meat or grill it.
